We apologize for the abruptness. It certainly isn’t what we planned. The sale was a long time coming, but like any big thing in life, sometimes it rushes up on you, finalizes itself at the last minute. As Ben, our stalwart, ever faithful manager said, ‘Sometimes things don’t happen they way you imagine it. It’s not a Hollywood ending. It’s just....a day”.

We wanted to go out with bellydancers, just the way we came in at our grand opening eight years ago. We wanted a Gypsy Strings reunion. We wanted a last visit from the flamenco guys, a last Cimbalom, a last dinner with Chatham Baroque. A final Psychic Symposium would have been nice. We missed our last chance for Thinking Person’s St. Patrick’s Day. We didn’t get to host a last Dr. Sketchy, or Queer Dinner, or Ghost Tour.

So our visions of time to say goodbye to all our Gypsy friends (this means you) won’t be appearing. It’s been a hell of a ride, and all thanks to all of you.

And, geez, we did a lot of stuff, didn’t we? We even made some pretty good food!

There are good things to come of this. New things. You won’t be left alone to wander the South Side lost and hungry for long. Another restaurant will be taking our space. They will be called “Slate” and they are planning a menu a bit like ours. Chef Cheryl Tacka and her partner, David Sgro, will take good care of you. Our dear friends at City Theatre and their patrons will have a new ally opening in time for the new season. They may even do brunch!

Secretly, I’m glad there won’t be a chance for hugs and tears. I don’t think I could take it.

On that note--opening I wrote a lot about last chances, but I should have ended every item with ‘at Gypsy’, like some fortune cookie game. Truth is, you’ll have plenty of chances to see all of the folks we’ve been proud to call our friends over the years, because they are lovely, creative, talented people, and they are damn good at what they do, and those kind of people don’t just disappear.

Maybe you’ll even see us again someday.

Meantime, Jim and Violetta and I are excited to start our next adventure, whatever that may be.

Friday night is opening night for City Theatre's POP!, a new musical by Maggie-Kate Coleman and Anna K. Jacobs, directed by Brad Rouse and choreographed by Billy Porter (yes, that Billy Porter) and featuring Anthony Rapp (yes, that Anthony Rapp) as Andy Warhol (yes, that Andy Warhol). It was little Violetta’s first Christmas at our house and we were so excited to watch her tear into her presents--something she’d excel at, judging what short work she makes of the Sunday paper...but, unfortunately, little Vi woke Christmas morning with a fever and spent the day out of sorts and overwhelmed by all the fun stuff with which we tried to entice her...funniest thing, toy-wise she was gfited with FIVE different toy phones. FIVE! All different! The winner seems to be the “house” phone on wheels from Aunt Sandy. Mostly though, I think she just likes the wheels!

Gypsy Strings News
We’re sad to say we no longer have the honor of the Gypsy Strings playing a regular Thursday night set here at Gypsy. It’s been wonderful having them for so long, and we will get to see them for special event dates, but fear not, we haven’t abandoned our dedication to Eastern European music!

The regular Thursday slot will be filled by Jerry Grcevich of the Gypsy Strings, as he works to introduce new young musicians ala The Bingham Street Tamburitzans, under his direction, and brings in other well known names to play with him.

No firm dates for Gypsy Strings, yet, but we’ll see you Thursdays at 8 for Jerry Grcevich and the gang! PLENTY OF ROOM TONIGHT! CALL FOR A TABLE!

Pavia Fleischer’s documentary chronicles a road trip by the filmmaker and Eugene Hutz, frontman and lead singer of New York's gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, through Eugene’s home country, Ukraine. Hutz's purpose is to rediscover his Romani gypsy roots and learn the secrets of gypsy music. Fleischer’s aim is to rediscover a forgotten romance. The result is a story of two people traveling together on two very different yet convergent courses.

 

This is an intimate portrait of a filmmaker with a passion for her subject, and a punk musician with a longing to revisit his past. Theirs is a journey which tests their relationship and challenges their perceptions of the music they both love.

 

Dr. Adriana Helbig from the Department of Music at the University of Pittsburgh will introduce the film.

 

Screening will be followed by a Gypsy Cuisine Reception sponsored by 

Gypsy Cafe.

Have we gone through all the fireworks yet? Our neighbors blew up enough stuff to rival the big show downtown; we Pittsburghers sure love to blow up stuff! On that note, we have some explosive announcements to make ourselves....we’ve been hinting around at some big changes coming here at Gypsy over the next few weeks, so here’s the first bits of info...

BRAND NEW MENU!!

Yes, I know every season we change our menu, but this time we’ve not only changed up the options, but also the categories. For Summer, we’ve got a much lighter bill of fare--we’ve added sandwiches (including the damn chicken salad sandwich that our former lunch guests harangue us about on the street), big entree salads, pastas available in two sizes, and smaller entree portions with smaller prices. Don’t worry--we kept a lot of your favorite dishes, like our world-famous Goulash and our Cevapcici Meatballs, but we’ve added a bunch of new flavors as well, like our Marinated Skirt Steak Sandwich with garlic-herb Chimichurri Sauce, and an Arabian Shrimp Appetizer--tiger shrimp dusted in ras-al-hanout spice blend and broiled for an earthy, aromatic, shrimpy treat! Come on down and eat your way through our new menu and find your favorites! Tell us what you think!

BRAND NEW SCHEDULE FOR REBECCA!!!

Another big change/expansion--we are putting lots of emphasis on events this summer--adding, subtracting, and shuffling around! First changes start tonight and tomorrow, as Rebecca, our resident Tarot reader, starts her transition from Fridays to Wednesdays. Today is her first Wednesday, and to welcome you and her to the new spot, we’ll help to celebrate with an appetizer on us! This offer is good for next Wednesday, too! Meantime, check with us for her remaining Friday availability throughout July, and in August she’ll be   permanently ensconced on Wednesday and Sunday nights! NEW EMPHASIS ON EVENTS!!! //THE STRINGS ARE MOVING TO FRIDAYS!

LOTS of music and other events on the way this summer, including a big change with our “house band” The Gypsy Strings! Starting in August, The Gypsy Strings will switch from every Thursday night to every other Friday night. We think the Friday move will make it a little easier on our loyal GS fans, who have been sacrificing their productivity on Fridays after a late night for quite a while now! Menu changes make for lighter menu choices for noshing late also!

Thursdays will still be dedicated to International Music--Jerry Grcevich of the Gypsy Strings is very excited to introduce lots of new talent to Pittsburgh, starting with the newly-minted
Bingham Street Tamburitzans this Thursday at 8!

The cool cool jazz of Hep Cat Number One himself, saxophonist supreme Don Aliquo graces us this Saturday! Join us for the sweet sounds of Don and his trio starting right around 8. Who can resist cool jazz on a hot summer night?

CAN’T STOP THE SERENITY//JOSS WHEDON BRUNCH

Can’t Stop The Serenity is a charity initiative started by Writer/Director Joss Whedon for the international women’s rights group Equality Now! Fans of Whedon’s sci-fi show Firefly organize showings of the Firefly film Serenity and gather to answer trivia questions, commiserate and generally have a good time. The Pittsburgh CSTS group are hosting their event on July 8th, and you can get all the particulars at www.cantstoptheserenity.com. In conjunction with their efforts, we will be hosting a Joss Whedon-themed Geek Brunch this Sunday with a portion of the proceeds being passed along to Equality Now! Come enjoy some delicious brunch and help out a good cause at the same time. NOTE: We’ll be closed for Brunch service NEXT Sunday the 17th for a private event.

Chef Jim here and between all that’s going on at Gypsy, trying to keep baby Violetta happy, and the ark we’ve been building in the basement (its been 40 days and 40 nights of rain by now, hasn’t it?), Melanie and I have been keeping pretty busy. Here’s a look at some of what’s happening:

SUMMERTIME SUMMERTIME SUM SUM SUMMERTIME....

With the unofficial start of Summer right around the corner, its time for a few schedule changes at Gypsy. First and foremost, we will be shifting to our Summer schedule next week, meaning we will no longer have dinner service on Tuesdays until the Fall.Things tend to slow down in the Summer, especially with our neighbors at City Theater going dark, so we will be suspending Tuesday service until the leaves start to fall.

In addition to Tuesdays, there are a few other dates we will be closed in the foreseeable future. This Sunday we will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday (Go grill something; it’s your patriotic duty!) and on Friday, June 10th we will be closed for a private event. Got all that? Good, because it’ll all be on the test.

LET THE CONTINENTAL DUKES SPICE UP YOUR THURSDAY!

Gypsy Cafe is both honored and proud to feature not one but two different bands playing amazing live music on alternating Thursdays. This week, it’ll be the pan-European musical stylings of the Continental Dukes gracing our stage, led by George Batyi, violinist extraordinaire and member of both bands that play here at Gypsy. I can think of no better way to kickstart your weekend than to join us this Thursday for a great meal and great music on a warm Spring night. Reservations are a must, as we do tend to fill up most nights that we have music. Speaking of which...

DON ALIQUO RETURNS TO JAZZ UP YOUR WORLD!

The one and only, the man, the myth, the legend, Jazz Brother Number One and premier saxophonist Don Aliquo will be gathering his trio and bringing them down to Gypsy on Saturday June 5th for a night of jazz so cool we won’t need ice for the drinks. The jazziness starts around 8 so, as I mentioned in the previous paragraph, get your reservations sooner rather than later and avoid being a big old L7, dig? (That means you’re a square, not an all-female grunge band from Seattle.)

OUT ON THE HORIZON

There is a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks here in our little Gypsy corner of the universe. June 2nd will bring the Momentum Festival at City Theater, featuring readings of new works and workshops all weekend long including performances by Anthony Rapp and new works by playwright Steven Dietz (no relation). June 5th will bring a very special edition of our semi-famous Geek Brunch as we celebrate the 34th Anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie(Sorry if I just made you feel old.).And what’s that I see just off in the distance? Is that the new Summer menu?
