NEW YEAR'S EVE at GYPSY--MENU 2011

How are your holidays going? It was little Violetta’s first Christmas at our house and we were so excited to watch her tear into her presents--something she’d excel at, judging what short work she makes of the Sunday paper...but, unfortunately, little Vi woke Christmas morning with a fever and spent the day out of sorts and overwhelmed by all the fun stuff with which we tried to entice her...funniest thing, toy-wise she was gfited with FIVE different toy phones. FIVE! All different! The winner seems to be the “house” phone on wheels from Aunt Sandy. Mostly though, I think she just likes the wheels!

The New Year is almost here--and here’s Gypsy’s Menu!

Gypsy Strings News
We’re sad to say we no longer have the honor of the Gypsy Strings playing a regular Thursday night set here at Gypsy. It’s been wonderful having them for so long, and we will get to see them for special event dates, but fear not, we haven’t abandoned our dedication to Eastern European music!

The regular Thursday slot will be filled by Jerry Grcevich of the Gypsy Strings, as he works to introduce new young musicians ala The Bingham Street Tamburitzans, under his direction, and brings in other well known names to play with him.

No firm dates for Gypsy Strings, yet, but we’ll see you Thursdays at 8 for Jerry Grcevich and the gang! PLENTY OF ROOM TONIGHT! CALL FOR A TABLE!

ISHTAR Saturday!
As you know, we love our International Music here at Gypsy---and we are so happy to have ISHTAR Vintage Bellydance Band playing this Saturday at 9! Join us!
http://www.ishtar-music.com/

Mark your calendars:
Thursday, November 24th: Closed for Thanksgiving
Saturday, November 26th: Jazz with Don Aliquo!

THURSDAY 20th The Gypsy Strings

The venerable Gypsy Strings grace us once again tonight, playing authentic, lively Eastern European dinner music led by Gypsy violin. Gypsy is so proud and fortunate to be a home for this great group of musicians for so long. There are changes on the horizon for all of us--be sure to come and see them and support the band and the cafe while you can. We Pittsburghers take things for granted a little too much sometimes....! Seating starts at 8; music at 8:30.

FRIDAY 21st Jerry Grcevich Tamburitzans with Barabe featuring Charlie Faltenovich

Jerry Grcevich of the Gypsy Strings continues his mission to introduce new musicians to the world, and we're so pleased he's showcasing new talent at Gypsy. Friday, join us at Gypsy to welcome Jerry Grcevich Tamburitzans w/ Barabe featuring Charlie Falentovich. Seating starts at 8; music at 8:30

SUNDAY 23rd The Pied Piper of Hützovina

How could Gypsy say no to an invitation to feed the people following a movie featuring Eugene Hutz from our beloved Gogol Bordello? (If you haven't figured it out yet, yes, we did name our baby 'Violetta' inspired by the song "Start Wearing Purple!"

Sunday, October 23, 2011 6:00 PM at Father Ryan Arts Center (few minutes drive from downtown Pittsburgh)  420 Chartiers Ave, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 (412) 771-3052

Director: Pavla Fleischer, 65 min, Ukrainian/Russian/English (w/Eng. subtitles)

Pavia Fleischer’s documentary chronicles a road trip by the filmmaker and Eugene Hutz, frontman and lead singer of New York's gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, through Eugene’s home country, Ukraine. Hutz's purpose is to rediscover his Romani gypsy roots and learn the secrets of gypsy music. Fleischer’s aim is to rediscover a forgotten romance. The result is a story of two people traveling together on two very different yet convergent courses.

This is an intimate portrait of a filmmaker with a passion for her subject, and a punk musician with a longing to revisit his past. Theirs is a journey which tests their relationship and challenges their perceptions of the music they both love.

Dr. Adriana Helbig from the Department of Music at the University of Pittsburgh will introduce the film.

Screening will be followed by a Gypsy Cuisine Reception sponsored by

Gypsy Cafe.
